Maintenance in the port of Rotterdam

On 25 March 2025, Diving & Salvage Company W. SMIT signed a new framework agreement with the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The focus is on inspections, emergency response works and repairs to cathodic protection systems.

Steel structures in the port, such as piles, sheet piles and combi walls, are continuously exposed to water and oxygen. This means there is a risk of rust. Without protection, corrosion affects the structure and shortens its service life. To prevent this, cathodic protection is applied below the waterline.

This system prevents the steel itself from corroding. It only works if it is properly maintained. That is why our divers regularly inspect the performance of the system, carry out measurements and make repairs where necessary. This keeps the Port Authority’s assets in top condition.

Maurice Krul, Commercial Director of W. SMIT, is proud of the extension: “We have worked closely with the Port of Rotterdam Authority for more than 60 years. It is special to be trusted once again with this important work below the waterline. In emergencies, we are also available 24/7 with people and equipment to respond quickly and safely. We look forward to the next four years. Together, we will ensure that the underwater foundations of the port remain strong.”
